The
following are the major National Parks of Tanzania:
ARUSHA NATIONAL
PARK.
This is one of the few National parks where one can walk freely,but
accompanied by a ranger. Strategically situated between the peaks of Mount
Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
The park has a beautiful array of features which include:
The Ngurdoto Crater :
It's surrounded by a highland forest, and it's crater extends 3 kms and
decends into a volcanic bowl teeming with wildlife.
Momela Lakes:
These are a number of crater lakes each geologically different from the
others, they are shallow, alkaline and fed by underground streams.
Mount Meru:
Widely considered as the parks major highlight. This is Tanzania's second
highest mountain and has an interesting mixture of lush forests and bare
rocks with a spectacular crater.
A wide range of wildlife can be found here, including giraffes, hippos
and elephant's. Also birdlife found here is also spectacular including
Flamingoes, Crowned Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Egyptian vulture and the
Hammerhead stork.
On the eastern side of the park is a cliff face that rises over 1500 m
and is one of the tallest in the world.
The old ash flows cascade down toward the crater floor, creating a stunning
and surreal effect.
LAKE MANYARA
NATIONAL PARK.
The park is named after Lake Manyara, which is one of Rift Valley's fresh
water lakes.It has over 380 species
of birds that mainly include the Pink Flamingo, Pelicans Cormorants, Egyptian
Geese and many more.
The park offers an interesting and wide variety of wildlife which includes
the famous tree climbing Lions, Giraffe,
Zebra, Aardvarks, Elephants, Hippos, Baboons and many more.
The scenery is quite contrasting. In the north are forests of tamarind,
mahogany and fig while the central part
of the lake is open grassland.
Also located nearby is a village market that deals mainly with African
fabrics and hand crafted wood carvings.
NGORONGORO CRATER.
This is the largest intact volcano on earth.It's considered to be one
of the natural wonders of the world.Ngorongoro covers about 100 sq miles
with the crater's rim being over 20 kms wide and 2000 feet deep.
The Crater walls are over 600 m high and are surrounded by mountain forests,lush
vegetation and fresh springs.No
other Park in Tanzania has such a varied concentration of wildlife as
Ngorongoro.Just about every species of
wildlife found in East Africa can be easily spotted here.
The forested Crater floor has well over 30,000 animals that include lion,elephant,wildebeest,buffalo,the
black
rhino and many other species
TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
This is one of the finest park in Tanzania. it's located inthe south east
of Lake Manyara along the course of the Tarangire River and covers an
area of 2600 sq kms.
The uniqueness of this park lies in the different vegetation each supporting
a distinct type of wildlife.The park is at it's best during the dry season
when many animals migrate here because there is never any water shortage.
The river and it's surrounding water holes attract various species of
birds that include Green wood Hoopoes, yellow collared love birds and
many more.
SERENGETI.
This is Tanzania's most famous Park and is perhaps best known for the
famous annual migration of wildebeest and zebra from
Serengeti to the Masai Mara in Kenya and back. Predators such as lions,cheetahs,hyenas
and leopards can easily be seen trailing these herds.
The Park generally is well known for it's large herdsof herbivores such
as wildebeest,zebra and many others.The landscape
also is quite breathtaking.Birds are also in abundance with well over
500 species recorded.
